Are 6 bridesmaids too many?

I'm getting married next year - we're having quite an intimate ceremony (I think) and a pretty big reception. I have 6 close females in my life that I really want as bridesmaids, but I'm worried it might be too many. if we figure out an equal amount of groomsmen, will it balance out better?
